Bryan Hindle

CSTDB, CSSW, Grad IOSH, PCAQT
Managing Director
Bryan Hindle - Brick-Tie MD

Bryan Hindle is first and foremost a surveyor. Qualifying as a timber and damp surveyor in 1982 having worked for his father’s damp proofing firm since 1976. He’s done many thousands of surveys since then, and likes nothing more than seeing a diary full of surveys to be completed.

Back-to-back terrace houses get the same attention from Bryan as Castles and mansions. You’ll always get a straight and honest answer from him, that’s why his phone never stops ringing. He’s a bit of a chatter box though, so if you ask too many questions you’ll end up a real expert too, so allow plenty of time!

Bryan is proud to hold the CSTDB and CSSW qualifications, which really are the minimum anyone should obtain before commenting on dampness, basement waterproofing or timber infestations. Remember though, that these qualifications are the start of learning and it takes years of seeing real life dampness and timber problems, to get the sort of expertise Bryan has.

He’s a product of a family business and the power of vocational training, so that is were his heart lies and it’s why his small firm, is an accredited ‘Investor In People‘ and is so dedicated to training and personal development – just check out the achievements of his staff to see how this works.

As we approach our 33rd year Bryan is still striving for improvement and is as enthusiastic as ever – in 2012 Bryan achieved a distinction in his NEBOSH ‘General’ Certificate in Occupational Health and safety and in 2013 this was followed by the NEBOSH ‘Construction’ certificate; both passed with distinction. Part of his goal to make Brick-Tie the safest company in the industry for staff and clients; he recently completed his NVQ level 5 in Occupational Safety And health; he is a graduate member of the Institution of Occupational safety and health (Grad IOSH).

In 2014 Bryan qualified as a Category 1 Thermographer. This enables Bryan to get the best use of our Flir 420bx thermal imaging system, for damp diagnosis and other elements of building pathology.

In 2014 all our technicians re-sat the Property Care Association, remedial technicians course and they all have this qualification. Our general manager Katrina Jackson and office administrator Sian Caley also sat and passed this test. Bryan sat the exam too, to find out where his team could be improved and so that he could see for himself, how they thrive in a learning environment – he wasn’t disappointed “I kept my head down and just observed them as they learned some new stuff and revised good basic fundamentals. I am very proud of them all”.

Bryan raised over £900 for Cancer research in 2012. With his team he raised over £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support, in 2013, with another £1400 for The Samaritans 2014.  2017 was St George’s Crypt’s turn to benefit for the homeless people of Leeds. This year (2018) we donated a total of £1000 to help young carers in the West Yorkshire area via Barnardo’s Willow centre in Leeds and the  Skelton Grange Environment,  all this has been achieved by donating money each time any customer feedback is received – so if you have used our services do please let us know your thoughts.

In 2012 Bryan completed the construction of Brick-Tie Preservation’s new laboratory at the Sherburn office, near Leeds. This fulfills his dream to offer clients cutting edge damp and timber consultant level testing, in house “I offer my heartfelt thanks to Graham Coleman for his help in training me to a higher level, so that I could explore the scientific aspects of dampness fully. Also to the PCA for their fantastic suite of training courses – I’d recommend those to all who have a passion for building pathology”.

Life-long learning is important so this past week he was chuffed to receive his ID card as a member of the Professional Biocide users Register. Of course Bryan doesn’t spray much woodworm or treat dry rot himself anymore, but as usual he wanted to sit the same courses and tests he expects his employees to attend. Here’s his ID card; the same one that all his staff hold too. Read about our journey towards the new biocide register here.

PCA Biocide Accreditation
Bryan attended the new PCA course for entry onto the Professional Biocide users register – as did all of our team

Bryan takes his health and safety responsibilities as seriously as all his other jobs in Brick-Tie; this year is passed his competency course in vibration as work assessment and control, achieving 94% in his assignment. He’s invested in state of the art equipment to help him monitor and reduce his employees exposure to harmful vibrations from tools they use in their daily work.

When not surveying and running the business Bryan relaxes, taking photographs, gardening, listening to music and reading.
